>
>
The walking stick may be considered a more general term that is applied to most types
of canes or sticks. It may be constructed of one, two or three pieces, the cane handle
may be fancy and uncomfortable, and it may have a knob handle or no handle at all.
Canes and walking sticks can be any length that you desire, although not all walking
sticks can be used very effectively as a source of support. Canes are better for that
purpose.

Keep in mind that not all walking sticks and canes are able to support an excessive
amount of weight, so be sure to check carefully and use common sense if the cane or
stick appears to be too thin. Also, when a woman and man are about the same weight
and height, the woman's hand will be slightly smaller than the mans so she will likely
bear down on the cane a little easier. So, it is a good idea to be sure that if the
cane is for a man it is thicker with a larger dimension.

It is important to take care of your canes and walking sticks. Clean with simple lemon
oil that is made for furniture; it is available at most stores. You can help to cover
up scratches and nicks on a dark wood cane by going over the area with a brown or
black felt tip pen (waterproof) and then rub it with a cloth or tissue. This works
amazingly well. For at-home storage, you can purchase a cane stand and place it by
your front door so you will always know where your helpful walking device is located.

If you have a silver cane, then use a good silver polish and rub the cane with a soft
cloth, as this can really bring out the shine. Never place your cane on a roof of
the car while opening your door and getting in, as often times you will drive off
and lose the cane. If it is necessary, then put it on the hood near your windshield
wipers so that you will see it before you start driving.

Since canes and walking sticks get dropped often you want to be sure to check the
handle closely for looseness and cracks. If you find that it is loose or cracked,
take it to be fixed immediately to avoid breakage and to avoid a potential accident.
Sometimes pieces of a wooden cane handle will chip off but this may easily be fixed,
so take it to a repair shop to be looked at before buying a new one. Visit www.walkingcaneco.com
for a wide selection of canes, cane accessories and walking sticks.

If you need assistance in walking or support in balance, then your healthcare provider
may recommend that you use a cane. Knowing the correct way to use walking canes is
very important, as it may help to prevent a fall or further injury. Whichever side
is having difficulty, then use the opposite hand to hold the cane. For instance, if
the pain or problem is in your left leg then you need to use the cane with your right
hand. As a general guideline, the height of a walking cane should come to your wrist
when you are upright and still.

Regular canes, fancy canes or custom canes are considered a proper fit if your elbow
is flexed about 15 to 19 degrees when holding your cane when standing. Experts advise
that you choose a cane that is the lightest it can be while still supporting your
weight. Of course, you should also choose a cane with good functionality and not just
because it looks good. Select from the many different styles of walking sticks and
canes by considering what each one offers, especially in the form of stability.

To make life just a little bit easier for blind individuals, technology is continually
testing out new ideas. A perfect example of this would be the sensors that are being
built into walking canes as a way to avoid potential problems, with sensors built
into the feet or legs. The sensors are programmed to detect such things as a shift
in weight that may indicate a problem ahead. The user is alerted by way of an audible
alarm or by a vibration in the cane handle. If the problem is something like uneven
ground ahead, then this warning gives the individual a chance to stop before getting
hurt and begin searching for an alternative route.

Be sure to have a good grip on the walking cane and shift as much weight as possible
to the cane when the module first warns of a potential problem, as there is always
the possibility of you not getting stopped in time and this will help if you are not
able to stop.

Your walking canes condition is important to functionality and safety so you want
to be sure to check them over thoroughly. If a problem is found, then take your cane
and have it repaired, as this will give you the best chance of avoiding an accident.

If regular canes sticks are just not your style and the thought of carrying an aluminum
cane doesn't thrill you, then consider designer canes. They give you the opportunity
to customize a cane that is not just like everyone else's, as you can have one created
that fits your personality and is uniquely you.

Do you have a special occasion coming up? Are you are getting married or are you going
to a formal, corporate function, and you are worried that your cane will be an eyesore?
Then perhaps a customizable, designer cane may be the answer. Most manufacturers have
the ability to design these fancy canes specifically to your needs. They can match
the colors for your wedding or the dresses of both the bride and the bridesmaids or
other formal attire, thus making sure all eyes are on the festivities and not your
cane.

Various themes such as flowers, holidays or even seasons are available through the
use of designer canes and the cane accessories can also be included in the theme.
You no longer have to worry that your metal cane will obviously stand out at any type
of event that you participate in. With some designers you also have the choice to
have your cane covered in some type of material such as felt or suede to add that
extra touch.

There are so many different styles of designer walking sticks and canes; some will
include designer handles, such as the classic derby or even one of the gorgeous translucent
handles. Many of them will include being decorated with beautiful patterns all over
the handle and the shaft. You can buy cane handles that are translucent and have them
filled with confetti, flowers or any other brightly colored item for a totally unique
look.

There are some truly amazing designer canes available that will definitely set you
apart from the crowd. For example, the twisted Lucite cane can be decorated with a
thin ribbon all down it for a candy cane effect and some have used different colored
spray paints on the cane making each color blend into the next, similar to a rainbow.
If you are looking for something really flashy, then there are some designers that
make their custom canes stand out with different types of jewels or gems glued up
and down the cane. However, if you crave the really different, then by all means check
out the designers that add small led lights to their canes in a number of different
colors designed to give off a soft glow, or you can have an alarm installed in your
cane for added security.

The term walking cane was not actually used until around the sixteenth century. Up
until that point walking sticks had been used for centuries, first as an aide when
walking over some type of uneven ground. Later they were used as a defensive weapon
and slowly began to evolve as a sign of authority and power, as well as a symbol of
social standing. The word "cane" became an accepted term after the walking stick started
to become fashionable and they were made of bamboo, rattan and cane. It is said that
a walking stick is associated with a more active action such as hiking, and that canes
were normally used by the elderly or by someone who had a long term leg injury.

During the late seventeenth century through the early twentieth century, good quality
wooden canes were considered a crucial accessory for a fashionable man. It told of
his importance and wealth, especially for those who could afford a gold or silver
cane. Some of the more unique ones were made from dried animal skins, an animal's
spinal column and even glass.

Walking sticks and canes have been a part of American society for years and they were
very popular with war veterans and members of fraternal orders, such as the Masons.
The canes were to be passed down as family heirlooms or given to commemorate some
type of special person or event.

Walking sticks and canes, staffs and scepters were used to depict events surrounding
the particular organization to be seen as signs of symbolism, badges of honor and
were usually ornately decorated with the different insignias and symbols of that particular
group.

Today, it is not unusual to find quite a bit of creativity being used to make custom
canes, as designs can be whittled, painted, carved, sculpted or even burned into the
finished canes. People request a variety of customizations, such as having fraternity
letters, business logos and even family crests added to a cane. You can also find
or request a certain object to be crafted as the head of the cane, such as a wolf,
eagle or bear head. You can also request that a little bit of personal history be
added to the cane, indicating significant times or events in their life that would
make it a very personal and thoughtful gift.

as medical apparatus. While a variety of quality, aluminum
canes will
always be available on the market, users can choose from a growing selection of attractive,
stylish canes that serve both fashion and function. These
decorative canes are available in a broad range of designs, colors and materials.

Design Options

Standard black
wood or silver
aluminum canes have been augmented by the availability of canes in every color
of the rainbow.

In addition, today’s canes can be found with floral
designs, abstract motifs and beautiful
woods with insets designed to appeal to every individual’s sense of style.

In addition to hundreds of colors and patterns, decorative canes come in different
sizes and to meet the needs of both men and women.

For example, extra
tall men can now easily find a cane that is handsome in appearance and, at the
same time, provides great support. There are attractive wooden canes available that
have a weight
capacity of 500 pounds are 44 inches tall to alleviate the need for bending.

Folding Canes

Folding
canes are growing in popularity and selection. They can fold into less than 9
to 12 inches in length and can be easily stored in a purse or briefcase.

Many folding canes come with their own wrist
strap, removable rubber tip and carrying case that looks like a fine quality cosmetic
bag.

Cane Handles

Whether you are buying an aluminum, medical cane with single or quad footing -- or
a beautiful, decorative cane that offers style and stability, the handle should be
an important consideration in the selection process. The shape and curvature of the
handle allows an individual’s weight to be distributed over the palm
of the hands and the cane shaft rather than over the fingers, which can be less
stable and possibly produce finger pain.

Handles can be made of a variety of materials that range from smooth lacquered wood
to molded plastic. Special grips can be added to help individuals more securely hold
the handle and use the cane with greater ease. Before buying a cane, always test the
comfort of the handle and the level of support the cane provides when walking. To
peruse a broad selection of designer style canes, visit the Walking
Cane Company.

"Thy rod and thy staff shall comfort me" >
